There is just nothing better that a fresh, warm gooey brownie.

Chocolate Chip Brownies are one of my favorites and are really simple to make. In fact, the past few times we’ve had these my 12 year old is the one that’s made them!

Chocolate Chip Brownies – Tips and Notes

  • What pan works best:  I prefer to use an 8×8 inch pan for this recipe, but you can also use a 9×9 inch pan with a slightly reduced baking time. You can also double the recipe and bake in a 9×13 inch baking pan for approximately the same amount of time, 40-45 minutes.
  • Instead of cocoa powder, you can use 2 ounces of an unsweetened baking chocolate bar that has been melted and slightly cooled.
  • Flavor variations: Substitute the semi-sweet chocolate chips with dark chocolate, white chocolate, peanut butter, mint, or butterscotch chips, or nuts like walnuts or pecans. These brownies also taste phenomenal without any chips at all!

FAQs

Can you freeze brownies?

Yes, to freeze brownies, first prepare as directed and allow to cool completely. Either slice the brownies or leave in the baking dish (so long as it’s freezer-safe!) then cover tightly with both plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw the brownies overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

Can you make brownies without eggs?

Yes, you just need to use a substitute such as applesauce, yogurt, buttermilk, or even a mashed banana. For every egg that a recipe calls for, you’ll want to use 1/4 cup of your chosen substitute. So to make chocolate chip brownies, you’ll want to replace the two eggs from the recipe with 1/2 cup of whatever substitute ingredient you choose.

How long do brownies last?

Brownies are good for up to five days when stored in an airtight container at room temperature.

How to tell if brownies are done

Brownies are done baking when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. You do not want your toothpick to be completely clean as this means your brownies will be over-baked. Be mindful that the chocolate chips in your brownies will be melted and gooey, so use a few different toothpicks when testing for doneness.

How to store brownies

Once the chocolate chip brownies are completely cool, cover tightly with plastic wrap or place them in an airtight container and store on the countertop for up to five days.
