Tips and Notes
Can I use frozen chicken?
Yes! You will just need to increase the cook time for frozen chicken by 1-2 hours.
What pasta works best for Chicken Alfredo?
I love to use refrigerated tortellini for crockpot pasta recipes, and it is what I recommend. It is a quick cooking pasta, so it doesn’t take long to cook in the sauce from the crockpot, and it also retains its shape and texture really well. It is the star ingredient in my Cheesy Crockpot Tortellini Recipe, so I knew it would work perfectly with Chicken Alfredo in the crockpot.
You can also try other short, dry pastas such as penne, rigatoni, or mini farfalle, though those will take longer to cook, roughly 45 minutes or more.
You can also boil your noodles separately on the stove and serve alongside your chicken Alfredo from the crockpot. This will prevent any mushiness, or disintegration that can happen to the pasta when being cooked in the crockpot. This method is also best if you’re using long noodles such as spaghetti, fettuccine, or angel hair.
Additions and Substitutions
- Feel free to add some veggies to this. Broccoli, spinach, and mushrooms would all taste delicious with this Chicken Alfredo! I would add the broccoli or mushrooms when there is about 30 minutes of cooking time left (before adding the pasta and cheese). For spinach, I would add it in with the pasta and cheese.
- You can lighten this recipe up by using 1/3 less fat cream cheese and subbing half and half for the heavy cream. The sauce will not be as rich and creamy, but it will be lighter on calories.

This looks fantastic and itโs my daughter ย favorite. Iโd like to make it fairly soon but what type of tortellini filling do you suggest for the first time? There are so many choices: cheese, three cheese, mushroom, garlic, etc., etc. Some sound much better than others!ย
Thanks for your help!
Hi Sarah! I like this with just the cheese filled tortellini, but the others sound delicious as well.
Hi Ashlyn, I just made this today but made a slight change because of what ingredients I had on hand.
I didn’t have cream cheese or shredded parm. And I didn’t have chicken breasts, so I used chicken drumsticks with any fat trimmed off. I was surprised it only took about 3 hours total on high. I added a can of drained mushrooms like you suggested. , and I had to use a package of Knoor’s Fettucini Alfredo instead. It’s 40 degrees and raining here today ( northeast PA.) so that hit the spot. Thanks!
This was delcious! We love a good alfredo pasta!
Mine turned out good, I used penne pasta(previously cooked) the sauce was almost too thick thoughโฆ do you have any tips for how to make it a little thinner?
Hi Joslynne, I would add a little chicken broth or milk to thin out the sauce to your liking.
Can this be doubled?
I need a recipe to feed a crowd.
Any changes, needed??
Yes you can definitely double it! No modifications needed.
Creamy, tasty comfort food, just what the doctor ordered! Alfredo is simply my favorite.
