Brunswick Stew
Brunswick Stew is a classic southern dish full of delicious smoked pork, veggies, and a savory barbecue broth. It’s the perfect way to warm up on a chilly fall day, or just when you’re craving a taste of the south!
Have you ever had Brunswick Stew before? If not, I promise, you are in for a treat! It’s a perfect one pot meal that uses smoked pork (or chicken), and combines it with a savory barbecue sauce broth and plenty of veggies. It’s the perfect way to warm up as the leaves start changing and the colder days and nights start to sweep in.
I know I’ve mentioned to y’all before about how I get pretty homesick out here in Hawaii. Of course we have beautiful surroundings and perfect weather, but when you haven’t seen your family in a year and a half…well, sometimes sunshine and palm trees just aren’t enough.
I really start to miss home this time of year, when the weather is changing (at least on the mainland, it is!) and all of the fun holidays are coming up. Sometimes you need just a little taste of home, and this Brunswick Stew is all that and a bag of chips, y’all. With every bite, it just fills me with warmth and makes me feel like I’m back home in sweet Georgia. 🙂
My husband made our smoked pork on his Big Green Egg, which I swear he loves more than me. 😉 He smoked a ten pound pork butt for our daughter’s first birthday party, and we had plenty left over. I love when that happens because then I get to make this Brunswick Stew! I made cornbread muffins to go along with our stew, and a big pitcher of sweet tea. The perfect southern meal to kick those homesick blues.
Give it a try if you’ve never had it before! I bet you’ll love it. 🙂
Recipe: Brunswick Stew
Ingredients
- 4 Tablespoon butter
- 3 cloves garlic,, minced
- 1 large yellow onion,, finely chopped
- 1 (15 oz) can fire roasted tomatoes (undrained)
- 4 cups chicken stock
- 1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce, (I used Sweet Baby Ray's)
- 2 Tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 1/2 pounds smoked pulled pork, (or chicken)
- 8 oz. frozen corn
- 8 oz. frozen lima beans
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Once melted, add the garlic and onions and saute until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the tomatoes, chicken stock, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire, brown sugar, cayenne, smoked pork, lima beans, corn and salt and pepper.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook over medium-low heat for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally.
This is a great recipe, i cut the barbeque sauce to a heaping cup, 1 T Worcestershire, and i use butter beans rather than lima and corn off the cob. ย Yum!
We had a little bit of left over pulled pork from July 4th that I wanted to use. I made this stew this evening and added one can of sliced potatoes since my son loves them. We thought it was good, but next time I’ll cut the cayenne down to half, omit the brown sugar, and maybe even cut down the BBQ sauce to one cup.
It was just a little too sweet and spicy for us, but I’d make it again while tweaking it a little for our tastes.
I’ve tried a couple of Brunswick stew recipes, but this one is just perfect. Great consistency and flavor. I am definitely going to be making this again.
Absolutely fantastic !! We did omit the brown sugar and added okra, but followed the rest of the recipe. Winner winner chicken dinner
Yours is the best recipe I have tried! ย The bbq sauce is the secret ingredient and I love to smell it cooking almost as much as eating it! ย Thanks!
Itโs awesome, the only thing I added was a touch of (57 sauce I like the twang.
I added about 1.5 cups of chopped bbq grilled chicken, ย 3 potatoes diced, 2 c frozen tomatoes from the my garden, 1 can of hot rotel and 1 T of chopped hot pepper relish! It was the best Iโve had ever!
Great stew. Changed recipe slightly no brown sugar thought it was plenty sweet with just bbq sauce and added 1 bag frozen limas 1 bag frozen mixed veg liked that better than just corn.ย
Man, is this one a winner. ย The brown sugar, the sweetness of the corn and Lima beams mixed with that Sweet Baby Rayโs bbq sauce made this one a hit at our house. ย Weโll be bookmarking this recipe for future use!
Thank you for sharing this recipe!! ย I love Brunswick stew, but have never attempted to make it because I thought it would be complicated. ย So glad I tried it. ย My husband has raved about it for days๐. ย I will say that I had to substitute a couple of things to avoid a trip to the store but Iโll definitely be making it again!
Good.
Hubby was craving Brunswick Stew, and now he’s a happy, happy man. Omitted brown sugar and used Four Sixes BBQ sauce. This is my new go-to recipe for Brunswick Stew! Thank you so much for posting it!
This is a very easy recipe to follow. ย I usually modify with what I have in the kitchen, or for my personal preferences, but followed this one almost exactly. ย What this recipe should note is that this results in a very sweet Brunswick stew, which I do not like at all. ย So just be sure to use a bbq sauce you know and like, and consider holding off on the brown sugar until you taste it after simmering, and adjust per your taste then. ย I tried to salvage it by adding some vinegar and hot sauce, but wasnโt able to help much. ย But as a base recipe, this is a great place to start.
I love this recipe, I have made this Brunswick stew about 5 times and it’s delicious. I do mix chicken and pork loin with this recipe. A bowl with butter toasted chabotta bread. Awesome!
I’ve lived in Georgia my whole life, and have had both good and bad Brunswick stew. When I searched for a recipe, I knew what ingredients I was looking for and what I wasn’t. For example – ketchup? No! Ground beef? No! Smoked pork bbq? Yes! BBQ sauce? Yes! I have made Brunswick stew many times before without a recipe, but because this was for a potluck, I couldn’t risk it not turning out perfect.
Your recipe gives me the proportions to make a huge batch of this for the company potluck and has all the right ingredients. Thanks!
When I visited Georgia in 2021, I got to try Brunswick stew for the first time, and every night since Iโve dreamt about having it again but no one here in Arizona serves it. ๐ฉ Last night my husband made it for me using your recipe and itโs even BETTER than I remember it. Thank you hubby!!!! ๐คค โค๏ธ ๐ Itโs basically bbq chili in my brain and itโs SO GOOD. I highly recommend 10000/10
