One of the first meals I ever learned how to cook was Shake and Bake Pork Chops. My meal prep repertoire at eight years of age first consisted of boxed macaroni and cheese and scrambled eggs, so I was super excited when my older sister helped me learn how to make my first ever meat main dish.
I used the boxed Shake and Bake mix in my earlier days of making pork chops, but these days I like to make my own homemade coating. It’s very easy to throw together and tastes even better than the prepared mix from the store.
I also like to make a large batch of the seasoning mix and store some of it in a resealable container for the next time I want to make homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops.
Because trust me; you’re going to want more of these golden, crispy pork chops in the future!

How to Make Homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops – Step by Step
Ingredient measurements and full instructions are located in the recipe card below.
- Combine the bread crumbs, oil, and all the spices in a large ziplock bag and shake to combine.
- Place one pork chop into the bag and seal the bag tightly. Shake the bag to ensure the pork chop is well coated. Transfer the pork chop to a greased sheet pan and repeat this with the remaining pork chops.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F.
Tips and Notes
- Pat your pork chops dry with paper towels. Removing excess moisture from the outside of the pork before adding the seasoning and coatings will help the chops to cook up nice and crispy.
- Use a thermometer to check the temperature of your shake and bake pork chops. The FDA recommends cooking pork chops to 145 degrees. Using a thermometer to check the temperature is much better than slicing into it to check for doneness, because doing so lets out all that juicy goodness!
- For an extra crunch, you can add a small amount of crushed cornflakes or panko breadcrumbs to the mixture. Just keep in mind that this will lend a different texture than traditional shake and bake pork chops.
- Don’t overcrowd the baking sheet. Make sure to leave some space between the pork chops so that they can cook evenly.
- Let the pork chops rest for a few minutes before serving to allow the juices to redistribute and keep the meat tender.
Homemade Shake and Bake Mix
The shake and bake seasoning mix can be prepped and stored for later use. Combine the breadcrumbs and seasoning ingredients together (don’t add the oil) then store in an airtight container with a lid. When you’re ready to use it, add the oil to the mix and proceed with the recipe.
Shake and Bake Pork Chops in the Air Fryer
You can easily make this homemade Shake and Bake Pork Chops recipe in the air fryer. Prepare the pork chops as directed and air fry at 400°F for 12-15 minutes, or until the pork reaches an internal temperature of 145°F.
Storing and Reheating Leftovers
Any leftover pork chops can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days. To reheat, you can place your prepared shake and bake pork chops in the air fryer for at 370 degrees for four minutes. You can also reheat for a couple of minutes in the microwave.

After defrosting pork chops for dinner last night, I went to get the box of Shake โN Bake from the cupboard, only to discover I didnโt have any. After looking for a dupe, I settled on this one. I thought that no matter which recipe I chose, it would taste a bit off from what I was used to, but I was wrong! This tasted great! The only thing I would add is, use a meat thermometer, and cook to an internal temp of 145 degrees. I cooked to 155, and it was a little drier than it should be, but that was on me. I’ll never buy boxed again.ย
Made these for dinner tonight! I followed everything except I only used Panko crumbs but that’s a personal preference on my part, I also used thick cut pork chips but I think maybe next time I’ll go thinner. Flavor was great and I’ll be making this again! Thank you!!
FABULOUS!! Totally going to save this one. Been using shake-n-bake for decades but this is way better. We did make one change: used Italian bread crumbs cuz that’s what was in the pantry.
Your recipe for shake and bake pork chops does not tell what temperature the oven should be.
Hi Ellen, the temperature is listed in step 1. It’s 425 degrees.
Yummy recipe, tried it tonight on Duroc bone in pork chops, baked to 145. Excellent. Thank you for the recipe!ย
