Strawberry season is right around the corner, so I figured it was the perfect time to share this fresh strawberry salsa recipe.
It’s full of simple ingredients and is a great way to put fresh summer strawberries to good use, especially if they’re freshly picked! It’s the perfect combination of sweet and savory ingredients and is packed with fresh flavor.
Strawberry picking is something we enjoy doing with our kids this time of year. I usually love to make Strawberry Crisp or Strawberry Pie with our freshly picked berries, but this easy Strawberry Salsa recipe is perfect for summer time and is going to easily become one of our go-to strawberry recipes!
I like to serve this as a dip with crispy tortilla chips, just like I would with salsa fresca or corn dip. But it is also absolutely delicious spread over the top of grilled chicken or fish.
We grilled some chicken thighs the other night for dinner and I used this strawberry salsa as a topping, then added the leftover strawberry salsa and chicken to a green salad for lunch the next day. It was so good!
Ingredients for Strawberry Salsa
- Fresh Strawberries – look for ripe strawberries that are a bright red color with leafy green caps. The sweeter and fresher your strawberries, the better!
- Lime – one juicy, fresh lime is plenty. You’ll be using the zest along with the juice from the lime.
- Olive oil – I like to use light olive oil in this recipe, but extra virgin olive oil works fine, too.
- Sugar – a little bit of granulated white sugar will bring out the natural sweetness of your strawberries.
- Shallot – this adds a savory balance to counteract the sweet strawberries. You could also use red onion instead.
- Basil – chopped fresh basil goes perfectly with the lime and strawberry flavors.

How to Make Strawberry Salsa – Step by Step

3. Season with salt and black pepper and stir.
4. Serve immediately or refrigerate until ready to serve.
Tips and Notes
- Fresh herbs are important. I like the flavor of basil with my strawberry salsa, but you could also try it with fresh cilantro. Just don’t use dried herbs; this recipe works best with the fresh stuff.
- Add a little heat. Add a thinly sliced jalapeno pepper to your salsa for a bit of a kick.
- Switch up the fruit. Pineapple or mango would be great substitutes for the strawberries in your fruit salsa recipe.
- Serve at room temperature or refrigerate for a few hours to allow the flavors to blend. I do find that this salsa tastes best served the same day it’s made.
- Store your strawberry salsa in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
FAQs
Traditionally, strawberries have been labeled as a ‘spring’ crop, but thanks to new varieties, their production can now stretch from spring through summer and even into fall, even in colder regions. In the eastern and midwestern northern states, strawberries are typically in season from mid-May to early July. Conversely, in the southern regions extending into Texas, strawberry season can kick off as early as late February and usually wraps up by late May or early June due to harsher (ie: HOT) weather conditions.
When selecting berries from grocery stores or the farmer’s market, pick ones that are bright red, shiny, and have nice green caps. Keep your strawberries in the fridge and dry until you’re ready to eat them. Oh, and don’t forget to give them a good sniff – sweet-smelling strawberries mean they’re ripe and tasty!
