Grilled Chicken Skewers are one of my favorite dinners during the summer time. We make lots of our meals on the grill when the weather is nice, and there is just nothing better than chowing down on some kabobs full of juicy, sweet and spicy chicken on a summer evening.
The marinade and sauce for these chicken skewers is simply delicious and has a savory Asian flavor. There’s a nice balance of heat and sweetness from the sriracha and honey, and I also love serving the sauce on the side for dipping with lots of fresh chopped cilantro to finish it off.

Ingredients for Sweet and Spicy Chicken Skewers

- avocado oil
- lime juice
- soy sauce
- garlic
- cornstarch
- sriracha
- minced ginger
- paprika
- cilantro
- salt + pepper
How to Make Sweet and Spicy Chicken Skewers – Step by Step
Step 1: Make the marinade
In a small bowl, combine the honey, avocado oil, lime juice, soy sauce, minced garlic, cornstarch, sriracha, minced ginger, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.
Step 2: Marinate the chicken
Place the chicken pieces into a separate medium sized bowl and sprinkle with the paprika, tossing until evenly coated. Pour half of the prepared marinade over the chicken and stir. Allow the chicken to marinate for at least one hour, covered in the refrigerator. Set aside the remainder of the sauce to use for glazing the skewers and for serving.
Step 3: Add chicken to the skewers
When ready to grill, thread the chicken onto skewers and discard any remaining sauce from the bowl.
Step 4: Grill the chicken
Preheat your grill to medium heat and grease the grill grates. Cook the sweet and spicy chicken skewers for 12-15 minutes, turning every 3-4 minutes or until chicken is no longer pink in the center. Brush with some of the remaining sauce during cooking.
Step 5: Serve
Transfer the skewers to a serving dish and sprinkle with chopped cilantro. Serve with remaining sauce on the side for dipping, if desired.
Sweet and Spicy Chicken – Tips and Notes
- Add some veggies. Vegetables like mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, and cherry tomatoes would all work great added onto your chicken skewers.
- Using wooden skewers? Don’t forget to soak them! If you’re using wooden bamboo skewers, you need to soak them in water for 20-30 minutes before grilling to prevent them from burning.
- No grill? No problem. You can easily make your sweet and spicy chicken using a grill pan on the stove, or you can bake them in the oven. See oven instructions below.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to four days.
FAQs
Yes, feel free to use chicken breasts. Instructions and measurements will all remain the same.
The longer you allow your sweet and spicy chicken to soak up the marinade, the more flavor it will have. Marinate your chicken for up to 8 hours, with a minimum of 1 hour.
If you’d rather bake your sweet and spicy chicken skewers, lay them on a foil lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes at 425 degrees Fahrenheit. I like to broil them a little at the end to add a little charred flavor.

I love the sauce of these with the smokiness from the grill. These are a summer favorite in our house.
I made a few alterations. I added a teaspoon of cayenne, half of a fresh squeezed lemon instead of lime juice and olive oil instead of avocado oil but it just enhanced the already delicious glaze.
Love this! My family always love a good bbq! Cant wait to try these skewers! All good for summer!
Looks delicious! I love grilled chicken! I’ve thought of doing skewers before but I tend to get lazy and just throw the whole piece of marinated chicken on the grill instead!
I can’t wait to try these on the grill! I love sweet and spicy!
Oh yum, this looks amazing! I would love the sauce.
