Nothing screams summer better than a good old fashioned Blackberry Cobbler Recipe.

And while summer is starting to wind down a bit, I couldn’t let it pass us by without sharing an updated version of one of my favorite summer desserts!

A white baking dish full of blackberry cobbler.

This recipe has lived on my blog for over six years now and it’s one that I come back to every summer. We actually have our own blackberry bush in our back yard that we planted on a whim a few years ago. It really came to life this summer, and my youngest and I had a lot of fun finding little blackberry treasures each morning when it was in full swing!

All that to say, if you’re able to pick fresh blackberries near where you live, then this is the perfect recipe to put them to good use!

The filling is super simple, just blackberries and sugar. Next comes the sweet, biscuit-like cobbler topping, and of course we finish it off with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream! It is heavenly!

Oh and if you’re a peach lover, make sure to check out my Peach Cobbler Recipe! It’s perfect for this time of year also.

Ingredients for The Best Blackberry Cobbler Recipe

Bowls of ingredients on a marble counter top.
  • Fresh Blackberries – make sure to use fresh, ripe, juicy blackberries for the best flavor! I LOVE to use Sweet Karoline blackberries when I can find them at my grocery store. I usually get mine from HEB, but I have seen them at Costco and Kroger, too. They also taste great in my Blackberry Sweet Tea.
  • Granulated White Sugar – you will need 1 cup of sugar for the topping and 1/2 of a cup for the filling.
  • Dry ingredients – you will need all purpose flour, baking powder, and salt for baking your cobbler.
  • Melted Butter – I recommend using unsalted butter. You will need one whole stick of melted butter..
  • Vanilla extract – adds a nice rich flavor to the fresh berries.
  • Egg – acts as a binder for the cobbler batter.

    Tips and Notes

    • Frozen blackberries will also work to make your homemade blackberry cobbler. Add them in just like  you would the fresh berries. No need to thaw first.
    • How to Store: Most cobblers are best if they are eaten the same day they are made, but any leftovers you have can be stored covered or in an airtight container for up to three days. It’s fine to leave on the counter top for up to one day, but after that I like to store in the fridge.
    • Freezer Instructions:  Bake the cobbler as written and allow it to cool completely, then wrap tightly in both plastic wrap and aluminum foil and store in the freezer for up to three months. Allow the cobbler to thaw partially in the refrigerator (about 1-2 hours) and then warm the cobbler in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until cooked through and bubbly.
