Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST Pot Roast EVER}
Mississippi Pot Roast – The most delicious pot roast you will EVER eat! Made with just five simple ingredients and slow cooked in the crockpot, you are going to fall in love with this!
I am very excited about today’s recipe. I have literally made it four times since getting the recipe from my mother-in-law just a few weeks ago. It is hands-down the BEST roast I have EVER eaten!
Seriously, y’all, I am in love with this pot roast and so is the rest of my family!
Like I said, I cannot take credit for creating this Mississippi Pot Roast recipe. It is just one of the many amazingly yummy recipes I have gotten from my mother-in-law over the years. Her homemade spaghetti sauce is one of the most popular recipes on my site, and it’s also one of my personal favorites.
What is Mississippi Pot Roast?
Mississippi Pot Roast is a combination of five simple ingredients that all cook together in your slow cooker. It’s typically made with a chuck roast, which is inexpensive and easy to find at most grocery stores. You can also makes this with other cuts of meat, like I have with Mississippi Pulled Pork.
Cooking a chuck roast over low heat in your crock pot yields incredibly tender results, and the other ingredients added to this roast give it incredible flavor!
Now I have no answer for you as to why this is called a Mississippi Pot Roast. But if all food that comes out of Mississippi tastes as good as this, then I might have to pack my bags and head over there! It’s the south, so it’s automatically an awesome state, I say.
The simplicity of this Mississippi Pot Roast is where its try beauty lies.
What do you need to make Mississippi Pot Roast?
Here’s the beauty of this roast. It’s so simple! You’ll need:
- a chuck roast
- ranch dressing mix
- au jus gravy mix
- butter
- jarred pepperoncini peppers
All of this comes together to make the tastiest, tenderest, most delicious pot roast ever.
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast?
This style of recipe is one of my favorites because it’s so easy. It’s a great dump and go kind of recipe. All you do is:
- Place the chuck roast in the bottom of your crock pot.
- Sprinkle the ranch and au jus mixes over the top of the roast.
- Add the butter and pepperoncini peppers.
- Place the lid on top and cook over low heat for 8 hours or more.
We’ve eaten this over rice and mashed potatoes and I loved it both ways. My mother-in-law also suggested it for sandwiches, so we might try that next!
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast in the Instant Pot?
I get this question all the time! All you need to do is add your ingredients to your Instant Pot, add about 1 cup of beef broth, then cook over manual high pressure for one hour. Let the pressure release naturally and you are good to go.
NOW, having said all of that, I MUCH prefer to make my roast in the crockpot. The flavors and texture are just better overall in my opinion.
Is Mississippi Pot Roast Keto?
Yes! If you’re following a Keto plan, you are in luck! This recipe is very low in carbs, so it will fit right in with your diet. My one suggestion would be to serve it with some delicious low carb sides like mashed cauliflower, cauliflower rice, or garlic roasted asparagus.

Recipe: Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST EVER Pot Roast}
Ingredients
- 1 (3-4 pounds) chuck roast
- 1 packet ranch dressing mix
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4-5 pepperoncini peppers
Instructions
- Place roast in the slow cooker and sprinkle the top with the ranch dressing mix and the au jus mix. Place peppers on top of the mixes, and add the butter.
- Cook over low heat for 8 hours. Serve with noodles, rice or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
Notes
- Do not add any water or broth to this! It will make enough liquid as it cooks.
- This tastes delicious with potatoes and carrots! I like to add a few quartered russet potatoes and a large handful of baby carrots to the crockpot when there is about 1-2 hours left of cooking time.
Hi!
Making this now! But using 1.27lb chuck roast because I couldn’t find bigger at the store. Do you recommend the same cooking time for a smaller roast?
I’d recommend roughly the same cooking time!
Very easy and the family loves it. I doubled the recipe when we had friends over. They loved it too, and we had a couple days of leftovers for easy warm lunches.
When you doubled the recipe, did you use two crock pots or one?
Wife and I tried this last week.
Taking a slow cooker and ingredients with to ND on a bird hunt to make the group.
It is my wife and I’s now favorite.
Thank You!
Absolutely delicious!
Hands down one of the best roasts I’ve ever served my family. Bonus points for how ridiculously easy it is to throw together. Thank you for the fantastic recipe!
Hi there what would the cook time be if i had fhe crockpot on high?
I found this recipe and decided to make a roast. I followed the basic instructions, ranch, the auju I had was an Italian blend. and I used some red pickled peppers because I did not have banana peppers. OHHH was it delicious and so easy to pop together!! I plan to make this again soon, I will shop special so I am able to follow the recipe to a tee next time. This was the best roast I ever made!!
Made for our weekly card game of five and pot was empty, I did add a jar of Mezzetta white cocktail onions drained and two tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, served with Zatarains rice, green beans, jalapeño cornbread and red lobster biscuits, “Yum”
Do you suggest doubling up on the packets of spice if you are cooking a 5.5lb chuck roast?
*I gave 5 stars cause it smells pretty darn good only after 3 hours of cooking so far!
Hi Lori! I think using 1 packet of each should still be enough, but if you’d like to add more I’d recommend 1 1/2 packets for that size.
My family really enjoys this recipe. I poured a little bit of the pepper juice in there as well. It was the best roast I’ve ever had.
Boneless or bone-in roast? and salted or unsalted butter? i could not find this information in the comments for the miss. pot roast. thanks
Hello, it’s a boneless chuck roast and unsalted butter. All the ingredients and instructions are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Loved it!
I’ve made this soooo many times and it’s always a hit. Sometimes I throw in whole fresh mushrooms during the final two hours, this jus adds to the goodness. I’ve als shared this recipe with countless friends and family.
We love this meal! It’s one of our weekly dinners. I wish it made extra gravy though because we like a lot. Is it possible to add 2 sticks of butter and 2 packs of the ranch & gravy packets? Don’t want to try it and ruin it.
Hi Katelyn, I’m glad your family is enjoying this! Unfortunately I have not tried that before, so I’m not sure how it would turn out. I would worry that the extra seasonings would make it too salty, though. You could always use a separate gravy packet and make it according to the directions on the stove and then use that for extra. I hope that helps!
Hi, what are the sizes of the ranch dressing and au jus gravy packets? They come in different sizes so I want to be sure. Also, I don’t have a slow cooked but I really want to make this recipe! Would a dutch oven in an oven work?
The packets are 1 oz each. And yes, many have made this in the oven with success. Roast for about 4 hours at 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
Can stew meat be used instead?
Hi JoAnn, I have never tried this with stew meat before, so I’m not sure how it would turn out. My one concern would be that stew meat usually has most of the fat removed, and you really need that when you’re pairing it with the gravy/seasonings and butter. If you try it, let us know how it goes!
An i sub banana peppers for pepperoncini.
Hi, yes you can.
