Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST Pot Roast EVER}
Mississippi Pot Roast – The most delicious pot roast you will EVER eat! Made with just five simple ingredients and slow cooked in the crockpot, you are going to fall in love with this!
I am very excited about today’s recipe. I have literally made it four times since getting the recipe from my mother-in-law just a few weeks ago. It is hands-down the BEST roast I have EVER eaten!
Seriously, y’all, I am in love with this pot roast and so is the rest of my family!
Like I said, I cannot take credit for creating this Mississippi Pot Roast recipe. It is just one of the many amazingly yummy recipes I have gotten from my mother-in-law over the years. Her homemade spaghetti sauce is one of the most popular recipes on my site, and it’s also one of my personal favorites.
What is Mississippi Pot Roast?
Mississippi Pot Roast is a combination of five simple ingredients that all cook together in your slow cooker. It’s typically made with a chuck roast, which is inexpensive and easy to find at most grocery stores. You can also makes this with other cuts of meat, like I have with Mississippi Pulled Pork.
Cooking a chuck roast over low heat in your crock pot yields incredibly tender results, and the other ingredients added to this roast give it incredible flavor!
Now I have no answer for you as to why this is called a Mississippi Pot Roast. But if all food that comes out of Mississippi tastes as good as this, then I might have to pack my bags and head over there! It’s the south, so it’s automatically an awesome state, I say.
The simplicity of this Mississippi Pot Roast is where its try beauty lies.
What do you need to make Mississippi Pot Roast?
Here’s the beauty of this roast. It’s so simple! You’ll need:
- a chuck roast
- ranch dressing mix
- au jus gravy mix
- butter
- jarred pepperoncini peppers
All of this comes together to make the tastiest, tenderest, most delicious pot roast ever.
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast?
This style of recipe is one of my favorites because it’s so easy. It’s a great dump and go kind of recipe. All you do is:
- Place the chuck roast in the bottom of your crock pot.
- Sprinkle the ranch and au jus mixes over the top of the roast.
- Add the butter and pepperoncini peppers.
- Place the lid on top and cook over low heat for 8 hours or more.
We’ve eaten this over rice and mashed potatoes and I loved it both ways. My mother-in-law also suggested it for sandwiches, so we might try that next!
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast in the Instant Pot?
I get this question all the time! All you need to do is add your ingredients to your Instant Pot, add about 1 cup of beef broth, then cook over manual high pressure for one hour. Let the pressure release naturally and you are good to go.
NOW, having said all of that, I MUCH prefer to make my roast in the crockpot. The flavors and texture are just better overall in my opinion.
Is Mississippi Pot Roast Keto?
Yes! If you’re following a Keto plan, you are in luck! This recipe is very low in carbs, so it will fit right in with your diet. My one suggestion would be to serve it with some delicious low carb sides like mashed cauliflower, cauliflower rice, or garlic roasted asparagus.

Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST EVER Pot Roast}
Ingredients
- 1 (3-4 pounds) chuck roast
- 1 packet ranch dressing mix
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4-5 pepperoncini peppers
Instructions
- Place roast in the slow cooker and sprinkle the top with the ranch dressing mix and the au jus mix. Place peppers on top of the mixes, and add the butter.
- Cook over low heat for 8 hours. Serve with noodles, rice or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
Notes
- Do not add any water or broth to this! It will make enough liquid as it cooks.
- This tastes delicious with potatoes and carrots! I like to add a few quartered russet potatoes and a large handful of baby carrots to the crockpot when there is about 1-2 hours left of cooking time.
Are you supposed to add the whole packet of ranch and a whole packet of au jus? Making this today!
Can I cook this on high for 4hrs?
Can you add the liquid that’s in the pepperocinis too?
Yes, I always drizzle a little in.
THE best.
Been making it for thanksgiving for 3 years now for the family and it’s what we look most forward to.
I was curious if you knew how long it can be cooked (on high setting) for in a crock pot if short on time?
I’ve always done the 8 hours on low but wondered if there was an alternate.
Thank you 🙏🏽
I’m so glad to hear your are enjoying this! I will say that I know others have commented here that have made this by cooking on high with good results, around 4-5 hours. I personally prefer low and slow for best texture and flavor though!
Made this many times! Depict!Instead of 8 hours on low can I make this on high for 4 hours? Pressed for time today.
LOVE this recipe! A friend recommended it a while ago and it is now a staple meal in our house. It’s also my cheat french dip recipe as well-just add thin sliced onion at the start. THANK YOU!!
I really love this recipe but found it to be quite salty. Are there any tips to make it less salty?
Help! Can I just use Ranch DIP packet ??
Yes!
LOVE this recipe. I shred the roast an hour before completion. Then I make sandwiches on Hawaiian rolls…with or without creamy horseradish sauce. Both ways are good!! Leftovers freeze well. I make taquitos, more sandwiches, or use shredded roast mixed in refried beans with diced green chiles and topped with shredded cheese.
This us a great recipe and I’ve now got it in regular rotation. However, if you have a smaller roast I’d recommend shortening the time.
Thanks for the sharing. This is a new recipefor me. Before I never know about this food. Great.
Can I use venison?
Hi Tiffany, I haven’t tried it with venison so I’m not sure how it would turn out. I will say that it works best with a fattier cut of meat like the chuck roast, so I’m not confident it would turn out as well.
I actually have it in the crockpot right now :). I make this with venison and it is AMAZING… the first time I made this my husband raved about it to his mom and you know that is an accomplishment for any daughter-in-law! Keep an eye on it and add a little water if your venison is a little dry.
Yes, my mom makes this with venison all the time!!! It’s soooo good. Use a whole stick of butter (1/2c) instead of 1/4c though.
I use venison roasts all the time, making this again today with one. They come out great.
I love this recipe. I changed it up to using 1/2 c unsalted butter since the packets are salty themselves but really I like it as written too. Turns out great! I also like to sear the roast before throwing it in the pot.
If I were to add carrots do this, how long before the end should I add them?
I like to add them when there is about 2 hours of cook time remaining.
Can gluten free brown gravy mix be substituted for the au jus mix for those of us who are on a gluten free diet? I cannot find a gluten free au jus mix.
Yes that is fine!
I generally am not a fan of pot roast because I find it dry. This recipe is now on my favorite list. So tender, moist and delicious.
Can’t wait to make it again.
Thanks for sharing
I made this exactly as written and it is THE BEST pot roast I have ever tasted. This is a keeper and a definite company meal!
Love this recipe… So Delicious 😋
Love this recipe… So Yummy 😋
Ive made this recipe dozens of time, but never added butter. Chuck roast is fatty enough and has so much amazing flavor. Why add more fat? It’s absolutely delicious without the added butter.
It’s even more absolutely delicious WITH the butter!
To each their own.
Does it matter if the peperoncinis (that’s spelled correctly!) and butter are on top or on the side of the meat? Should the liquid & meat be stirred once in a while? I used a 2 pound roast (I live alone) so used 3/4 the ranch & gravy mix & butter. It’s cooking now or else I’d tell you how it is.
I place the peppers and butter on top of the meat but as the butter melts they will usually slide down the sides of the meat and that’s fine. No need to stir; keep the lid on until the end of the cook time. Hope you enjoyed it!
I like to add more fat while doing low carb lifestyle due to needing to balance macros. It’s adds a different flavor profile as well. Try it! 🙂
I come across your article at this midnight! I am starving during reading the instruction of this pot roast! Thanks you!!
Can I cook this on high for 4hrs?
Tasted good but was to greasey
My husband HATES pot roast in a slow cookers but LOVES this recipe. Thanks
Best roast EVER!! I cut the butter back to just under 3/4 of a stick
I halved the ranch packet and added more peppers just because 🙂 but did everything else as written. Cooked for 12 hours because I work out of town and this was AMAZING!! I got sooo many compliments. Will be using this recipe again! SO happy with how this turned out! Thank you!
Could I use a pot roast seasing mix instead of Au jus.
Yes you can.
