Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST Pot Roast EVER}
Mississippi Pot Roast – The most delicious pot roast you will EVER eat! Made with just five simple ingredients and slow cooked in the crockpot, you are going to fall in love with this!
I am very excited about today’s recipe. I have literally made it four times since getting the recipe from my mother-in-law just a few weeks ago. It is hands-down the BEST roast I have EVER eaten!
Seriously, y’all, I am in love with this pot roast and so is the rest of my family!
Like I said, I cannot take credit for creating this Mississippi Pot Roast recipe. It is just one of the many amazingly yummy recipes I have gotten from my mother-in-law over the years. Her homemade spaghetti sauce is one of the most popular recipes on my site, and it’s also one of my personal favorites.
What is Mississippi Pot Roast?
Mississippi Pot Roast is a combination of five simple ingredients that all cook together in your slow cooker. It’s typically made with a chuck roast, which is inexpensive and easy to find at most grocery stores. You can also makes this with other cuts of meat, like I have with Mississippi Pulled Pork.
Cooking a chuck roast over low heat in your crock pot yields incredibly tender results, and the other ingredients added to this roast give it incredible flavor!
Now I have no answer for you as to why this is called a Mississippi Pot Roast. But if all food that comes out of Mississippi tastes as good as this, then I might have to pack my bags and head over there! It’s the south, so it’s automatically an awesome state, I say.
The simplicity of this Mississippi Pot Roast is where its try beauty lies.
What do you need to make Mississippi Pot Roast?
Here’s the beauty of this roast. It’s so simple! You’ll need:
- a chuck roast
- ranch dressing mix
- au jus gravy mix
- butter
- jarred pepperoncini peppers
All of this comes together to make the tastiest, tenderest, most delicious pot roast ever.
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast?
This style of recipe is one of my favorites because it’s so easy. It’s a great dump and go kind of recipe. All you do is:
- Place the chuck roast in the bottom of your crock pot.
- Sprinkle the ranch and au jus mixes over the top of the roast.
- Add the butter and pepperoncini peppers.
- Place the lid on top and cook over low heat for 8 hours or more.
We’ve eaten this over rice and mashed potatoes and I loved it both ways. My mother-in-law also suggested it for sandwiches, so we might try that next!
How do you make Mississippi Pot Roast in the Instant Pot?
I get this question all the time! All you need to do is add your ingredients to your Instant Pot, add about 1 cup of beef broth, then cook over manual high pressure for one hour. Let the pressure release naturally and you are good to go.
NOW, having said all of that, I MUCH prefer to make my roast in the crockpot. The flavors and texture are just better overall in my opinion.
Is Mississippi Pot Roast Keto?
Yes! If you’re following a Keto plan, you are in luck! This recipe is very low in carbs, so it will fit right in with your diet. My one suggestion would be to serve it with some delicious low carb sides like mashed cauliflower, cauliflower rice, or garlic roasted asparagus.

Recipe: Mississippi Pot Roast {The BEST EVER Pot Roast}
Ingredients
- 1 (3-4 pounds) chuck roast
- 1 packet ranch dressing mix
- 1 packet au jus gravy mix
- 1/4 cup butter
- 4-5 pepperoncini peppers
Instructions
- Place roast in the slow cooker and sprinkle the top with the ranch dressing mix and the au jus mix. Place peppers on top of the mixes, and add the butter.
- Cook over low heat for 8 hours. Serve with noodles, rice or mashed potatoes. Enjoy!
Notes
- Do not add any water or broth to this! It will make enough liquid as it cooks.
- This tastes delicious with potatoes and carrots! I like to add a few quartered russet potatoes and a large handful of baby carrots to the crockpot when there is about 1-2 hours left of cooking time.
It’s called Mississippi Roast because a woman from small town Ripley, Mississippi, is credited with the recipe. (My hometown). She was on a talk show in New York for it. It’s a pretty awesome claim-to-fame for our quiet small town!
If you are on a keto or low carb diet you can add xathum gum to the sauce to get a nice gravey just make sure to stir fast and well whenn adding as it can clump fast in hot liquids.
This is the best pot roast I have ever made!. This will definitely be my go to recipe for a roast. I cooked it on high for 4hrs. Added my vegies after 2hrs and everything was perfect!
I’m glad I saw your comment, that you cooked it on high for 4 hours. I have always done it on low all day, while I’m at work. Today, I needed to start it later and I was hoping it might be done in 4 hours if I put it on high so thank you, Lynn!
This is a wonderful recipe. I’ve been making it for almost a year after a friend had the ingredients sent to us so I could make it after my husband’s open heart surgery. It is so easy to put together. I tend to keep all of the ingredients on hand, except for the chuck roast. So when I find a nice chuck roast for a good price, I pick it up. Even my picky eater children eat this!
Delicious. I don’t think anyone could screw this up!
Wow, this is by far the best, easiest and flavorful recipe for Mississippi pot roast, fabulous, love the pictures for visual understanding. Thank you
Excellent flavor, time and time again, always tastes excellent, everyone absolutely devours this. Thank you, my go to everytime pot roast recipe.
I made this before and LOVED IT. I’m making this again but for 18 people, can I just double the entire recipe? Or just the chuck roast? Don’t want it to be too salty if I double everything.
Thanks!
I would use two crockpots and yes double it all!
Outstanding & Easy! I use 1/8-1/4 cup sliced MILD Banana Pepper Rings, drained. Turns out excellent and is not hot, just a bit tangy. Truly amazing and perfect for beach days or busy work days. No fuss. No mess. No worries. Enjoyed by all!
Probably the best pot roast I have ever had, though it is a bit salty
Love this recipe! Its great as is. Was also delicious when I added a jar of drained & rinsed giardiniera instead of a few peppers. The cauliflower takes on the gravy flavor and it’s so good!
Can I use a rump roast for this? Also, seems like a lot of sodium. Does this tastes really salty?
Terry – you can use unsalted butter to cut down on some of the salt. It doesn’t taste salty. I’ve only used a chuck roast so I can’t tell you if a rump roast would work but I wanted to reply to your question about the taste.
This is delicious a regular at my house. I don’t always use the au jus pack, but I do season & pan-sear the chuck roast before I throw it in the crockpot. I find this way the meat is more flavorful. It also gives it less of that “crockpot” texture. It’s a great recipe, well-liked by all family members!
My friend just fed me this and it is amazing! I will be making it soon!
Try substituting brown gravy mix for Au Jux. We like it better than Au Jux. Both are still the bomb of a pot roast.
I make my own ranch seasoning, you control the salt that way. Most delicious roast EVER
Thanks
Delicious!! And makes the most awesome gravy!
This was recommended to me to get rid of hidden ranch seasoning. It was delicious! Now I gotta figure out what to do with the rest of the seasoning.
Try chicken, bacon, ranch, avocado wraps! Just mix cooked, diced chicken, cooked, crumbled bacon, ranch packet to taste and an avocado. If its a little dry you can add a spoonful or two of mayo. Serve in your favorite wrap or tortilla with sliced tomatoes, leafy greens and a little diced onion.
So good!
Here is a recipe for homemade ranch seasoning. That way you can adjust the seasonings to your liking. I used it and it’s great. I did not use the full amount of salt it calls for.

This meal was a huge hit with my family!! The roast was so delicious, and full of flavor. I highly recommended this recipe.
I used to make crockpot roast with the typical lipton beefy onion soup mix…husband always got heartburn. I was so reluctant to try this but this is absolutely the best…and husband does not get heartburn!!!
Have made this atleast 3 times over the past 4 months. Family love it, I serve it with egg noodles which is really good
I’ve always used beefy onion soup mix as well been hearing nothing but good things about this roast going to give it a try
